How TestAssure Works: A 7-Step Walkthrough of Automated WFM Testing
A single misconfigured overtime rule can underpay thousands of employees before anyone notices. When you're onboarding to a new WFM platform, the question isn't whether to test. It's how to validate thousands of pay scenarios before go-live without burning hundreds of hours of SME time.
Here's what that looks like inside TestAssure, step by step.
Step 1: Start at Your Dashboard
After you log in, you land on your organization's dashboard: one workspace for every automated testing activity, from building tests to reviewing results.
Step 2: Organize by Test Suite
Test suites group your work by testing type: Functional Testing, System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and Parallel Testing. Keeping them separate gives each phase of your implementation its own clear scope and status. For this walkthrough, we'll focus on a functional suite.
Step 3: Open Your Test Bed
Select Test Cases within the suite to open your Test Bed, organized into folders by functional area, such as Timekeeping and Accruals.
Best practice: Structure folders around pay rules, features, or business needs. When a CBA is renegotiated or a new jurisdiction comes online, you'll know exactly which tests are affected.
Step 4: Drill Into Individual Tests
Expand a folder (daily overtime, for example) to see each test case. Open any test to view its step-by-step logic.
Step 5: Read the Test in Plain Language
Every test is written as simple Given / When / Then statements. No code required. A payroll SME, an HRIS analyst, or an auditor can read a test and understand exactly what it validates.
That readability also turns your Test Bed into living documentation of how your configuration behaves, so WFM knowledge stays with your organization even when team members move on.
Step 6: Define the Persona and Scenario
Build the scenario in the Given section:
- Persona: for example, "I am an hourly employee," with the relevant attributes
- Pay rule: for example, California-specific daily overtime
- Grounding date: an anchor date that keeps results consistent
- Schedule and punches: the shift and punch times that should trigger the rule
Best practice: Choose a grounding date away from major holidays so results stay stable every time the test is rerun.
Step 7: Run the Test and Review Results
Right-click the test and select Rebuild. Results return in seconds, showing whether overtime and other pay rules calculate as expected.
- Unexpected change? You've caught a defect before it reaches a paycheck.
- Intentional change? New legislation or a renegotiated contract means updating the test and rerunning it, so your regression coverage stays current.

Why This Matters at Enterprise Scale
One test is simple. The value comes from running thousands of them across personas, jurisdictions, union contracts, and employee groups, and rerunning them every time something changes.
- Save time, scale your process. A manual test case can take 15 to 60 minutes to execute. An automated TestAssure test runs in about 4 seconds, helping teams reduce testing time by up to 90%.
- Catch what manual testing misses. Some users have reported finding up to 10x the defects uncovered by manual testing.
- Stay ahead of change. In WFM, last month's passing test is no guarantee for next month. Rerunning your full Test Bed with every software release, policy update, or legislative change keeps stable features stable and protects payroll accuracy.
